REI: RENEW Energy Initiative

Zero Emission Vehicles

Setting the Stage

EV Updates

Public and private forces are merging to provide Americans with another clean and safe transportation alternative. Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles will finally make it to showrooms in 2015. Although NASA has used this technology to propel vehicles into space hydrogen fuel cells have only recently been harnessed for wide scale commercial use.

Accelerating deployment of the vehicles is a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between California, Oregon and Six Northeastern states to see 3.3 million zero emission vehicles on the road by 2025. The MOU address distribution, pricing and fueling issues. RENEW Energy Initiative has established a workgroup to coordinate stakeholders of electric vehicles of all types. Contact Us if you’d like to join the group or enter your thoughts and questions in the Discussion Blog below.

EV's: Off To the RACES!

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA)has added electric vehicles to its championship racing series. Famous for Formula 1 racing the FIA has been quick to embrace electric vehicles. The Formula E racing series will kick off a 10 city tour in 9 countries on September 25, 2014 in Beijing. The popularity of electric vehicles is catching on amongst commuters and the vehicle’s safety and performance are sure to be driven by high performance racing.

A Look Inside

Fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) have the potential to significantly reduce our dependence on foreign oil and lower harmful emissions that contribute to climate change. FCVs run on hydrogen gas rather than gasoline and emit no harmful tailpipe emissions. Several challenges must be overcome before these vehicles will be competitive with conventional vehicles, but the potential benefits of this technology are substantial.

Topic: EV use for emergency power
Recently, I saw an article on a unit in Japan that supplies emergency (e.g hurricanes) household power for 2 days using the electric car battery charger connection in reverse. Well, not really reverse but with added inverter functionality as I would design it.
The link to the information is:

I discovered some interest in this idea and now looking for any further information on the feasibility of this in North America from our team or visitors to our web site. There could be any number of local electrical design issues but it is an interesting twist on the use of EV technology.
Please consider adding any viewpoint to this blog. We would like to hear from Electricians, Regulators, Engineers and possible users as well as US equipment vendors if they exist.
